Independent Advocacy Worker (Full-Time) – 0.5 Prison Advocacy & 0.5 Substance Use (Community)

Independent Advocacy Perth & Kinross is a values-driven, rights-based organisation providing independent advocacy to individuals across Perth & Kinross. We support people to have their voices heard, their rights upheld, and to be fully involved in decisions affecting their lives.

The Role

We are seeking a passionate and committed Independent Advocacy Worker to join our friendly team committed to upholding the rights of individuals in many settings. You will work directly with individuals who may be experiencing mental health issues, learning disabilities, or other vulnerabilities in HMP Perth & HMP Castle Huntly and those struggling with alcohol or drug use living in the community, ensuring they are supported to express their views and make informed choices. Being an independent advocacy worker is hugely rewarding.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one independent advocacy in line with the Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA) Principles and Standards.

• Support individuals to understand and exercise their rights.

• Attend meetings with or on behalf of individuals (e.g., ICM’s, care reviews, mental health tribunals, discharge planning).

• Maintain accurate case records and contribute to monitoring and evaluation.

• Work collaboratively with professionals and partner agencies (3rd Sector and Statutory).

Person Specification

Essential:

• Experience in providing advocacy or support services.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Understanding of the principles of independent advocacy.

• Ability to work independently and manage a caseload.

• Commitment to equality, diversity, and human rights.

Desirable:

• Knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., Mental Health (Care & Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003, Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000).

• Experience working with people with mental health issues, learning disabilities, or substance use challenges.

• Full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
