About Us 

Making Rights Real is a small and mighty human rights organisation in Scotland that works with communities and grassroots activists to deliver human rights for everyone. Since launching in 2020 we have been working with communities to name and claim their human rights. Having established ourselves as an effective and impactful organisation, we now look forward to a remarkable future in the next five years.

Our founding Chair, Professor Jo Edson-Ferrie is stepping down from the Chair’s role after a remarkable six-year tenure of leadership that established the organisation and set the groundwork for our incredible staff team and Trustees to establish strong governance and deliver impactful human rights change alongside communities.

We are now seeking a values-led champion for human rights to serve as Chair of our vibrant organisation as we embark on the next exciting phase of our development. 

Our Chair will ideally have:

• Governance experience at Chair/Vice Chair level, or Chief Executive/Director level in the voluntary and/or community sectors 
• Skills in democratic processes, negotiation, and conflict resolution in governance settings 
• Knowledge and experience of influencing in external environments, including academia, the wider Third Sector, community development, and central and local government 
• Knowledge and experience of independent fundraising 
• Understanding and experience of community development values, processes, and practice 
• Experience of dealing with contentious responses to Human Rights Based Approaches (HRBA)
• Experience in dealing with the media.

All Board members are required to act in compliance with the established code of conduct, evidencing impartiality, fairness, and the ability to respect confidences.
