Background on Glasgow Community Energy:

Glasgow Community Energy is a renewable energy co-operative working to ensure Glasgow’s transition to net-zero is rooted in climate and social justice. We currently operate two community-owned rooftop solar panel installations and have around 200 members and a growing network of partner community organisations across the city. Our solar installations were financed by grant funding and community shares – where local people had the opportunity to invest and become members of our co-op. We sell reduced-cost electricity to the host buildings which generates an income that we use primarily to distribute to local community groups via our Cathy McCormack Community Activism Fund. The Fund is also distributing additional funding in 2026 and 2027 that we have been awarded by Foundation Scotland. 

In 2024 we developed a business plan laying out our strategy for growing the community energy sector in Glasgow over the next 5 years. We were successful in securing funding to support this and are now part way through the second year of delivering this work. Over this period we aim to develop and install 1-2 Megawatts of new community-owned rooftop solar panel projects, deliver a targeted community engagement programme, develop our activism fund and increase our membership.

The Engagement Co-ordinator will join our team alongside two existing members of staff (Development Manager and Renewables Co-ordinator) and our volunteer Board.

Overview of the Role

Working closely with the Development Manager, Renewables Co-ordinator, Board and community partners, the post holder will lead the delivery of the following work streams:

Neighbourhood engagement. We work with a broad range of local community organisations across Glasgow to improve understanding of community energy and ensure that local people are in control of how our projects are developed. We run a programme of events and ongoing engagement work in target areas, primarily focusing on marginalised and underprivileged neighbourhoods, where we work alongside local people to identify potential community owned energy projects and work together to make them happen. 

Membership and communications. We recently launched a Community Membership scheme, which aims to reduce barriers to membership of GCE. This has been supported by the development of a new Client Relationship Management (CRM) tool and a new website. Further work to promote the membership offer and engage new and existing members in our work is planned, as well as further development work to improve our CRM. This will be integrated alongside a broader comms programme for social media, newsletters, website updates etc. 

Community Activism Fund. We have recently completed a series of workshops with community organisations across Glasgow to co-design the funding principles and process for our community activism fund from 2027 onwards. A set of recommendations from this co-design group will inform the detailed development and rollout of the 2027 fund.

This role is ideal for someone with a dedicated background in community engagement in the non-profit sector who is excited to work collaboratively in a small, purpose-driven team. The post holder will need excellent skills in project management, event co-ordination, relationship building, communications and social media, a good working knowledge of grant funding processes and a commitment to community led climate action.

We value transferable skills and welcome applicants from non-traditional or community-based backgrounds. Knowledge of the community energy sector and a commitment to social and climate justice would be valuable attributes for applicants.

This is a full-time post for 37.5 hours a week, on a fixed term contract for the period 1st October 2026 to 31st July 2027.

We hope to secure funding to extend the post until 31st March 2028, and possibly beyond, but this is not guaranteed.

The post is funded by the National Lottery Climate Action Fund, Foundation Scotland and the Glasgow Climate Action Hub.
