Background and Need Case

Scotland has formally recognised a biodiversity crisis and is widely acknowledged as one of the most nature-depleted countries on Earth. Urgent, evidence-based action is required if we are to reverse ecological decline and achieve meaningful nature recovery. Badgers, as native ecosystem engineers, play an important role in soil health, habitat dynamics and wider ecological resilience. Yet they remain one of Scotland’s most misunderstood species, with long-standing myths continuing to influence public attitudes and policy debates. In the current digital environment, misinformation spreads rapidly through social media, often outpacing scientific evidence and responsible conservation messaging. 

Scottish Badgers is Scotland’s only charity dedicated to the conservation, protection and welfare of badgers in Scotland. Established in 1999, we have spent more than two decades promoting evidence-led policy development and we’re proud to have influenced progressive changes in animal welfare legislation in recent years. However, as a small, volunteer-led national charity, Scottish Badgers does not currently have the dedicated communications capacity needed to respond proactively, challenge inaccuracies constructively, and ensure that accessible, science-based information reaches communities, supporters and decision-makers. Investment in a Communications Partner is therefore essential. 

This role will enable the charity to translate complex ecological knowledge into clear public messaging, strengthen digital engagement, support informed civic discourse, and contribute meaningfully to Scotland’s wider nature recovery ambitions.

Role Responsibilities

Our Communications Partner will deliver the following priorities:

• Design and deliver a coordinated 6 month digital campaign. This will focus on stabilising and rebuilding our ongoing digital presence.
• Consolidate our digital presence (currently across multiple national and local accounts)

Where time allows within the contract, our Communications Parter will also:

• Manage and develop our social media presence, building connectivity with other similar organisations
• Support regular member newsletters (with content provided by Trustees and volunteers)
• Assist trustees in translating advocacy priorities into accessible communications
• Provide monthly analytics reports, leading to a longer term communications strategy

Experience

Experience in charity communications and digital campaigning is essential. Experience in wildlife or environmental communications is desirable.

• Proposed day rate (expected to be within standard third sector freelance ranges of £200 - £300 per day).
