Role
Stockbridge Parish Church is recruiting a book-keeping assistant. The role will suit someone with broad book-keeping experience. The role will be based in the church office at 7B Saxe-Coburg Street, Edinburgh EH3 5BN, with the opportunity to work flexibly, subject to office cover requirements (see further below).
From time to time, the book-keeper may be required to cover office opening duties for the Office Administrator.
The Finance Assistant role will be 10-15 hours/week.
Remuneration will be £15/hour
Successful applicants will be eligible to apply to join a workplace pension scheme (NEST) pension, and will have a pro-rata entitlement of 28 days FTE, including public holidays.
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
The Finance Assistant has a broad range of responsibilities, covering purchase/sales ledger support, processing activities related to banking, credits cards and cash, and preparing/submitting gift aid claims.
Specifically, some of the key responsibilities include:
• Processing, recording and filing of invoices, credit notes, staff expenses and payments to purchase and sales ledger records in the Xero accounting system.
• Processing and reconciliation support in relation to supplier payments, remittances and statements.
• Payables and Receivables monitoring and follow up.
• Posting of bank payments and receipts, ensuring accuracy and support for monthly reconciliation.
• Processing of monthly credit card statements transactions, including upload to Xero.
• Assisting the Treasurer in preparing monthly reports for the Kirk Session.
Additionally, there are duties which support the Treasurer in areas such as financial reporting, audit and year end accounting preparation. The role will provide opportunities to be involved in project work and finance support for and grant applications.
The successful candidate will have:
• Knowledge of Xero Accounting software an advantage but not essential as training will be given.
• Ideally an understanding of restricted and unrestricted funding, but training is available on how funding works in the charity context.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Excel at intermediate level, and a good working knowledge of MS Office applications such as Word and Outlook.
• Excellent communication, both written and verbal, when dealing with colleagues, external agencies, and service users.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all work, with an ability to collect and interpret data and produce reports.
• The ability to learn to work autonomously, to prioritise and manage workload to deliver within tight timescales and deadlines.
• Able to handle confidential materials with confidence and sensitivity.
• The ability to stay up to date and compliant with all relevant Church of Scotland finance and charity policies and procedures and to comply with our strict confidentiality and data protection requirements, and any other legislative regulations connected to your work.
About Stockbridge Parish Church
We are a friendly Parish Church, dedicated to serving the Community of Stockbridge and the surrounding area in the centre of Edinburgh and welcoming visitors to the city. In addition to Sunday Services, we have a thriving Music Hub and the Church halls are used for a variety of activities throughout the week from Parent & Toddler Group to yoga classes. August is a particularly busy time as the Church provides a popular Fringe Venue space. There is a small staff team, which works closely with the Kirk Session (akin to a management committee), Minister and other volunteers to run the Church activities.
