Role
Options in Life is a Fife based charity, which supports young adults who have autism, learning disabilities and/or additional support needs. We run a social inclusion and skills development program of weekly full day activities for our groups of Service Users, fully supported by our own staff.
The successful candidate will take a support role, with our Recreation Program groups on one or two days a week, to include a Tuesday and possibly one other day. There may also be the possibility of additional ad hoc hours on other days/evenings. The groups are out each week for the full day, and the role involves taking an active part in all activities while supporting young adults with autism, learning and other disabilities.
The Support Worker will be required to support and encourage Service Users to meet new challenges, work as a team and support each other. The aim of the Recreation Program is to bring out the best in our Service Users by helping them to meet new people, make friends, build confidence and self-esteem and realise their own potential. It is the role of the Support Worker to facilitate these aims while, most importantly, encouraging the group to have fun.
Applicants, therefore, must have experience of people with learning, social and communication difficulties and an understanding of autistic spectrum disorder. He/she must be able to communicate well with our Service Users and their families or their carers and personal support staff. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
Applicants must able to demonstrate enthusiasm and leadership ability. They must be a warm, friendly and patient individual, with a caring and sensitive nature, and be understanding and respectful of others. They must be willing to empathise with and listen to others. Applicants must be reliable, non-judgemental and have the confidence and initiative to deal with unexpected situations as they occur.
Due to the physical nature of activities involved, the Support Worker must also be sufficiently fit and active, in order to fully participate - possibly being required to demonstrate for others to learn from (in kayaking, zip wiring, cycling, rock climbing for example).
The post is subject to an enhanced PVG check.
