Role

Veterans Chaplaincy Scotland (VCS) was formed as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) in February 2023 (SC052358) but had operated for a number of years under the Workplace Chaplaincy Charity (which is now discontinued).

VCS exists to promote, develop and manage the pastoral and spiritual support to military veterans and their families across Scotland, and to train, support and develop both lay and ordained people to engage in chaplaincy through Veterans Chaplaincy Scotland.

VCS is developing its reach across Scotland and employs a small number of staff and retains volunteer Chaplains to deliver its core services across Scotland. It is at a crucial stage of its development and the Board of Trustees are seeking to appoint a National Director for the Charity who will provide high-level leadership to help shape and strengthen the future of chaplaincy provision. The individual will drive vision, influence, and long-term planning, ensuring the charity is well-positioned to support its chaplains and those they serve. This is a non-operational role for provision of chaplaincy, but the postholder will complement the day-to-day leadership provided by the Head of Chaplaincy Operations.

The initial appointment will be Part Time for around 14 hours per week but rising to Full Time of 36 hours per week depending on funding being generated. The closing date for applications is Friday 15th August 2025, and it is planned that interviews will take place in September. The appointment is subject to a four-month probationary period and to suitable references and pre-employment checks. We envisage the role starting as soon as possible once a suitable candidate is recruited.

Application notes

If you believe you have the Senior leadership experience, skills and experience in the charity, military, public, or faith-based sectors (ideally involving chaplaincy, pastoral care, or welfare services or human resources) then you should write to the Chairman, Rev Dr David Coulter CB OStJ at the Registered Office of VCS at 101b Dundee Road, Perth PH2 7BB enclosing your CV, details of three referees and a covering letter explaining your interest and suitability for this post. A Job Description and Person Specification is available from the Office Administrator, Liz Mackie at Liz.mackie@vcscotland.org/ or from https://vcscotland.org/

It is a genuine occupational requirement that the National Director is an active member of a Christian denomination and have a personal Christian faith (although Chaplaincy support is given to veterans of any faith and none)
